Where we travel
From the western valleys around Paro to the rarely visited east — the places our journeys go, and what waits in each.
Destination 01
The valley of first impressions: Bhutan’s principal international airport, Rinpung Dzong, the National Museum and the Tiger’s Nest on its cliff.
Destination 02
A small capital with no traffic lights, where government, monastery and café culture share one small valley.
Destination 03
The old capital, warm enough for rice and oranges, whose dzong at the meeting of two rivers is one of the finest buildings in the Himalaya.
Destination 04
The pass between Thimphu and Punakha, crowned by 108 chortens and, on clear days, a sweeping view of the eastern Himalaya.
Destination 05
A wide glacial valley where black-necked cranes spend the winter, watched over by the Gangtey monastery.
Visit on: Valleys of the Black-necked Crane
Destination 06
A quiet western valley reached over the Chele La, known for farmhouse homestays and its white and black temples.
Visit on: Haa Valley & Hidden Villages
Destination 07
The central town whose huge dzong once controlled all east–west travel, and the ancestral seat of the royal family.
Destination 08
Four high valleys of orchards and buckwheat, with many of the oldest temples in the kingdom.
Destination 09
The rarely visited east: great dzongs above deep river gorges, fine weaving and a warm village welcome.
